| To many people in Guernsey the name Charles Jaques is synonymous with local art. Born in London’s East End, within the sound of Bow Bells, Charles is a true cockney. His father was an engineer, as well as a talented painter and woodworker, and his mother worked as a dressmaker in the city. The family moved to Ashford in Middlesex and then to Brighton when Charles was eight years old. His art master at the Grammar School there had a profound influence on him and steered him towards his eventual artistic career. He trained at Goldsmiths in London until the outbreak of the Second World War, when he joined the Army and served in the 7th Armoured Division the “Desert Rats.” |
