Carel Toms is well known throughout the Bailiwick as a photojournalist, as well as an artist of considerable talent.
He was born in Guernsey, an only child, whose father was
a photographer and amateur artist.
After completing his education at Les Vauxbelets School, he joined the Guernsey Press Company and worked his way up from printer’s devil to features editor. The Second World War interrupted this career, and after training in the U.K. he was
sent to France, where the Germans captured him. He was transported to Poland, but eventually returned to Guernsey
after the war had ended. He resumed working for the Press Co.
until his retirement over twenty years ago.
In November 1999 he held his one-man exhibition here at the Sula Art Gallery. His enchanting watercolours and drawings of familiar island scenes were popular with locals & visitors alike.

We at Sula Art Gallery have a large selection of Carel’s work on view and for sale.
